Call to Action TRC Response

I would implement the recommendation of improving education attainment levels and success rates, as well as developing a culturally appropriate curriculum through classroom activities (Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, 2015). These activities will elaborate on the diversity, and various cultures, that are present amongst the students, community, and world. With a detailed look at the cultural differences that exist, students will be able to build a better understanding in regards to this area. I would carry out a talking circle activity for my grade 1 classroom which would involve the students having to take part in conversing and sharing their personal thoughts.  The topic for this talking circle would be to share personal experiences that relate to the students cultural background such as family traditions, or to share anything about themselves so that everyone can get to know each other. With this activity in place, the classroom will build a sense of community, a positive and inclusive learning environment, and healthy relationships amongst one another. With the arrangement of this discussion, I will be able to tailor my teaching style to my students by designing culturally appropriate learning experiences. Another idea would be to include guest speakers, personal presentations, family photos etc. with these ideas being implemented, students will learn why these differences are important, and how they shape us as individuals. This will lead to students feeling confident and comfortable with the curriculum, resulting in successful learning outcomes due to the structure and design of the learning content.

Reflection:

Through in class activities that are engaging, informative, and adapt to the diversity in the classroom, I will be successful in teaching my students culturally appropriate curriculum.
